Upcoming Cyber Security Events in Australia for 2019

2018 was an eventful year for cyber security in Australia. The Notifiable Data Breach Act was enforced early on in the year and the My Health Record Act was amended to introduce stricter and more detailed regulations. In order to update security professionals on new developments in the industry, Giva has compiled a list of upcoming cybersecurity events in Australia during 2019:

1. BSides Melbourne: 16-17 February, PwC Southbank, Melbourne

   This inclusive event is an opportunity for speakers from all walks of life to present their ideas to a warm and supportive audience. Speakers range from university students with fresh outlooks on cybersecurity to experienced researchers and experts. The event will alternate between 15-minute data blitzes and longer, in-depth talks about cyber security, risk management, data security, protecting serverless apps and much more.

2. Cyber Security Training: 20-21 February, Regus, Circular Quay, Sydney

   This two-day event allows attendees to acquire the necessary skills to design and adopt security strategies. Speakers include experienced industry professionals who will assist participants through lectures, teamwork activities and independent study. Some of the modules include the basics of cyber security, types of threats, breaches and cyber attacks as well as prevention techniques, tools and software.

3. Cyber Security Training: 18-19 March, Regus, Circular Quay, Sydney

   This two-day event allows attendees to acquire the necessary skills to design and adopt security strategies. Speakers include experienced industry professionals who will assist participants through lectures, teamwork activities and independent study. 4. Cyber Security and Data Privacy Law Update: 21 March, UNSW, CBD Campus, Sydney

   This seminar aims to help attendees to identify cyber risks and learn about updates in data security legislation. It also intends to introduce potential techniques and measures that could be enforced to protect against potential threats. Some of the topics that will be discussed include how to minimise the repercussions of data breaches and how to implement the Australian Data Breach Notification Regime.

6. AusCERT Conference 2019: 28-31 May, Surfers Paradise Marriott, Gold Coast

   AusCERT is organised by one of the top Cyber Emergency Response Teams (CERT) in Australia. The theme of this year's event is "It's Dangerous to go Alone" and encourages attendees to bring their teams along for the ride. It aims to provide cyber security teams with knowledge building tools through exclusive talks and tutorials to prepare them for future threats.

7. OzSecCon 2019: 14-16 June, Melbourne Polytechnic Heidelberg Campus, West Heidelberg, Melbourne

   This conference focuses on the physical security of data and devices. The first day of the event will consist of hands on workshops, followed by two days of presentations, competitions and demos on physical security. In addition, multi-day training courses will be held to give attendees the opportunity to gain in-depth information and experience in various areas.

8. Australian Cyber Conference 2019-AISA: 7-9 October, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Wharf Melbourne

   This event brings cyber security experts and executives together to influence change in the industry. It consists of a range of live demos, presentations and panel discussions on how to deal with existing and future threats. The conference is an opportunity for business leaders to interact with colleagues and experts in the cyber security field.
