New App Helps Reduce Food Waste and Hunger in Australia
In 2014, businesses in the Sydney metropolitan area alone produced 190,000 tonnes of food waste. Yet according to Foodbank, 200 million Australians deal with hunger each year and more than 500,000 turn to food relief services each month. Despite the fact that businesses are producing food surpluses, people are going hungry.
Fortunately, there is a new app that is helping to bridge the gap between businesses with extra food and people facing hunger. Through the Yume app, Australian restaurants and cafes can choose to either donate their excess food to charity or sell it at 50% of its original price. Yume helps food reach the homeless community, as well as other individuals who may not be able to afford a full price meal.
Not only is the app helping to solve world hunger, but it is also helping increase environmental sustainability. Australian businesses that join Yume will no longer have to worry about producing excessive amounts of food waste. Instead of ending up in a landfill, extra food will reach hungry stomachs. This is a major win for the environment, especially because almost half of Australia's waste is deposited in landfills.
So far, over 250 businesses have joined Yume, and the numbers are growing. If you work at an Australian restaurant or café that is interested in donating or selling its surplus food, you can sign up on on Yume's website.

The app organisation will also be making an appearance at the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. On 5 March 2016 between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm, Yume will be providing $1 meals from popular Melbourne chefs to app users. All of the money raised will be donated to local food charities.
